Teacher: Professor Jampa Khedup

Classical Tibetan Language and Grammar class is based on the book My Land and My People (ངོས་ཀྱི་ཡུལ་དང་ངོས་ཀྱི་མི་དམངས།) by His Holiness Dalai Lama, and is offered together with the Tibetan Writing Class. The book for the class is chosen because of its rich vocabulary and clear written format, making it an excellent resource for learning Tibetan grammar.

Each class analyzes a section of the book from the points of view of vocabulary, grammar and meaning. The classes take place online and are always recorded for registered students who cannot attend them during regular class times. In addition to group practice, students are assigned individual homework in memorizing new vocabulary, reading in Tibetan, as well as written assignments. These are designed to systematically teach all necessary areas of learning the Tibetan language, initially consisting of two short paragraphs and gradually progressing to larger assignments.

The classes are led by Geshe Jampa Khedup, a highly qualified professor of Tibetan language, equally fluent in English and Tibetan. His background in classical monastic education adds another benefit to the students, as he is able to clearly explain the implied meaning of the text when it is not obvious. Geshe Jampa Khedup is also supervising the writing classes, and acts as the head of the language department at SICGU.
